Why this applies to Indinavir

Indinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the key thing to understand: this interaction works in one direction. Indinavir is a strong blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which happens to be the same enzyme that breaks down evodia's active compounds (like evodiamine and rutaecarpine). So if you take them together, the concern is that indinavir could slow the clearance of evodia, letting more of it build up in your body. In other words, indinavir may raise evodia's levels, not the other way around.

This is theoretical and comes only from animal and lab studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, evodia isn't well studied in people, and you don't want anything competing with how steadily your HIV medication works. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Indinavir also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for indinavir (Crixivan). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. In lab studies, evodia appears to slow that same enzyme. If that happens in people too, indinavir could clear more slowly and build up higher than expected. That can mean more of indinavir's usual side effects, like nausea, stomach upset, headache, and the kidney stones it's known for, so staying well hydrated matters.

The important caveat: this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in humans, so it stays theoretical for now. Still, because HIV therapy is something you don't want to throw off, please run any evodia product past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Indinavir Used For?

  • Indinavir is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Indinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although indinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
