Indinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the concern with pairing Schizonepeta and Indinavir. Your body clears indinavir using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Animal and lab studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta, schizonepetin, may speed that enzyme up. If it does, your body could clear indinavir faster, which means lower drug levels in your blood.

That matters because indinavir is an HIV medicine, and you need steady levels to keep the virus suppressed. Weaker levels could let HIV bounce back or raise the risk of resistance. The good news is this is only theoretical, based on animal data, not real human cases. Still, with an HIV drug I wouldn't take chances. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Indinavir Used For?

  • Indinavir is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Indinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although indinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
