Apixaban falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for Eliquis (apixaban): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this blood thinner from your body. In animal studies, a compound in Schizonepeta seemed to speed that enzyme up. If the same thing happened in people, your body could clear apixaban a little faster, which in theory might lower its blood level and make it slightly less effective at preventing clots or strokes.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The evidence is only lab and animal data, not real patients, so we can't say it actually matters in humans. Still, apixaban is one drug where you don't want to gamble, since weaker protection can mean a clot. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your dose on your own.

About Apixaban

What Is Apixaban Used For?

Brand name: Eliquis

Apixaban is used to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous clots traveling through the body in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). It is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in the leg) in adults after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to treat DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, including reducing the risk of those clots coming back.

Eliquis (the brand-name tablet and kit) is additionally approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and reduce the risk of recurrent VTE in pediatric patients from birth and older, after at least 5 days of initial anticoagulant treatment. The generic apixaban tablet carries the adult indications only.
