Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), ondansetron (Zofran), paroxetine (Paxil), risperidone (Risperdal), tramadol (Ultram), venlafaxine (Effexor), and others.

Here's the gist with Schizonepeta and cyclobenzaprine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear cyclobenzaprine from your body. In lab and animal studies, a compound in this herb appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, cyclobenzaprine could linger a bit longer and hit harder than usual.

In real terms, that might mean more of this drug's typical effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and feeling foggy or unsteady. The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on early research, not proven in humans, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since both can add to sleepiness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for these two together. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break down cyclobenzaprine and clear it out. A compound in Schizonepeta appears to slow that enzyme down, at least in lab and animal studies. If it does the same in people, your body might clear cyclobenzaprine more slowly, letting it build up a bit.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with these two together. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril). Lab and animal studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, it could move cyclobenzaprine out of your system a little faster, which might make it feel like your muscle relaxer isn't working as well, so you could notice more lingering muscle stiffness, pain, or spasm.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test tube and animal research, not human studies, so this is more of a theoretical concern than something we see happen often. Cyclobenzaprine isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the other way. Still, before you combine them, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Cyclobenzaprine Used For?

Brand names: Cyclobenzaprine, Flexeril, Cycloprine

Cyclobenzaprine tablets and extended-release capsules are used alongside rest and physical therapy to relieve muscle spasm caused by acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions — easing pain, tenderness, and limited movement. This use is intended for short-term treatment only (up to 2–3 weeks).

Tonmya, the sublingual (under-the-tongue) form of cyclobenzaprine, is separately indicated for the treatment of fibromyalgia in adults. It is not the same as the oral tablet or capsule formulations.
