Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking evodia with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro and animal studies show that rutaecarpine, a constituent of evodia, inhibits platelet aggregation.

Here's the basic idea with Evodia and defibrotide (Defitelio). Defibrotide is a strong clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital to treat a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. Evodia contains a compound called rutaecarpine that, in test-tube and animal studies, appears to make platelets (the cells that help blood clot) less sticky. So in theory, layering Evodia on top of defibrotide could add to the blood-thinning effect and raise the chance of bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or harder-to-stop bleeding.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical and based only on lab and animal data, not human studies. Still, since defibrotide is used in already fragile, post-transplant patients, this isn't something to mix on your own. Please clear any Evodia or herbal product with your transplant team or pharmacist first.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
