Why this applies to Deflazacort

Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for deflazacort (Emflaza). Your body converts it into its active form and then clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest evodia may slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let more active deflazacort linger in your system, nudging up the usual steroid side effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood or sleep changes, stomach upset, and over time, bone thinning.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, not from people, so we truly don't know if it matters in real life. Still, since deflazacort is taken daily for an important condition, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding evodia rather than deciding on your own.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
