Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the idea with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo). Evodia appears to speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways involved in clearing estrogen. If that happens, your body could break down the hormones a little faster and leave lower levels in your blood. With a contraceptive, the worry isn't a dangerous side effect, it's the opposite: weaker protection, which could mean breakthrough bleeding or, in theory, a higher chance of an unplanned pregnancy.

That said, this concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. Since you're counting on this pill to work, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the thing to keep straight: in this case, your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo) is acting as the blocker, and evodia is the thing being affected. Estrogens can mildly slow down the CYP3A4 liver enzyme that helps clear evodia's active compounds. So in theory, taking them together could let those evodia compounds build up a bit higher and stick around longer.

This is based only on lab and animal research, so it's quite theoretical, and I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger picture is simply that we don't know much about evodia's safety alongside your pill. Since reliable birth control matters, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding evodia.

Your birth control pill mixes two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears them partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, evodia appears to slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more hormone hang around, which might bump up familiar pill side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Here is the honest part: this has only been seen in test tubes, never in actual people, so it may not happen at all in real life. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since pregnancy prevention matters and evodia isn't well studied, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and skip it entirely if you might be pregnant or are breastfeeding.
