Here's the important thing to notice about this pairing: the interaction runs in one direction only, from your birth control pill (Ovulen) toward the Evodia, not the other way around. The estrogen part of your pill, mestranol, can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Since one of Evodia's active compounds (rutaecarpine) is cleared by that same enzyme, the supplement could theoretically build up to higher levels in your body.

In plain terms, your contraceptive isn't expected to work any differently or cause new side effects from this. The concern is mostly about more pronounced or unpredictable effects from the Evodia itself. Keep in mind this is based only on lab and animal research, so it's theoretical. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before combining them.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill, Ovulen, contains two hormones (ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol) that your liver clears partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Evodia, in test-tube studies, appears to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let the hormone levels in your body run a little higher than usual, which might mean more of the typical pill side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or spotting.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it has only been seen in lab dishes, not in real people, so we genuinely don't know if it matters in everyday life. Still, since this is your contraception, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia.
