Evodia + Quinine Sulfate
Quinine Sulfate brand names: Quinamm, Quinine Sulfate.
Quinine Sulfate falls into 2 drug categories that Evodia can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Evodia interacts with whole categories of medication. Quinine Sulfate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Evodia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS
1 of 2Why this applies to Quinine Sulfate
Quinine Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing quinine with evodia. Quinine can act as a mild blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the same enzymes that helps clear evodia's active compounds out of your body. So the concern runs in the direction of evodia building up, not quinine. With that enzyme slowed down, more of evodia's ingredients could linger and their effects (and any side effects) might be stronger than expected.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal studies only, using a much stronger enzyme blocker than quinine, so it's theoretical. Still, since evodia itself isn't well studied in people, I'd run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Quinine Sulfate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear quinine. In lab studies (test tube only), evodia appears to slow that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in people, quinine could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which means stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects.
With quinine, that could look like ringing in the ears, headache, dizziness, nausea, or blurred vision, a cluster of symptoms doctors call cinchonism. Quinine can also affect heart rhythm, so extra exposure is worth respecting. That said, this is only theoretical and has not been seen in humans, so I don't want to alarm you. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than stopping anything on your own.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.

What is Evodia?
- Digestive upset and nausea
- Headaches
- Menstrual cramps
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
Evodia is a fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for digestive complaints, headaches, and menstrual pain.
