Here's the situation with gentian and nitroprusside. Nitroprusside is a powerful IV medication used in a hospital setting to bring down dangerously high blood pressure or to control it during surgery. Lab studies suggest gentian may relax blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down a little on its own. In theory, stacking that on top of nitroprusside could add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect, meaning a greater chance of things going too low (lightheadedness, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or fainting).

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from test-tube and animal data, not from people, so it's quite theoretical. And practically speaking, nitroprusside is given by a drip in a closely monitored hospital, where your blood pressure is watched minute to minute. Still, always tell your care team about any supplement you take.
