Why this applies to Dronabinol

Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP2C9 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear dronabinol out of your system. In lab testing, German chamomile appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in a real person, dronabinol could linger a bit longer and build up, which might make its effects stronger than expected, things like dizziness, drowsiness, feeling foggy or unusually high, a faster heartbeat, or a drop in blood pressure when standing.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube studies, and it has never actually been reported in people. A cup of chamomile tea now and then is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you plan to use concentrated chamomile supplements regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down dronabinol. In lab dishes, German chamomile appears to slow that enzyme down. If that same effect happened in people, dronabinol could clear out more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects than expected. Think more drowsiness, dizziness, a racing heartbeat, confusion, or feeling especially "high" or anxious.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only based on test-tube work, and nothing like it has actually been reported in real patients. An occasional cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause trouble, while concentrated extracts are more of a question mark. If you take dronabinol regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up before adding chamomile.

German chamomile is a widely used herbal remedy taken mainly as a tea for calming, sleep, and digestive complaints. Early research suggests possible benefits for mild anxiety and some skin or digestive issues, but the evidence is limited and most uses are based on tradition rather than strong proof. It is generally well tolerated, but people allergic to ragweed or related plants and those who are pregnant should be cautious.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
