Fosamprenavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the situation with chamomile and your HIV medication. Fosamprenavir is itself a prodrug, meaning your body converts it into amprenavir, which is the active form that fights the virus. That active form is then cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, German chamomile appears to slow this same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, the amprenavir might clear more slowly and build up, which could mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, diarrhea, rash, or headache.

The important thing to know: this is only test-tube evidence, and it has never been reported in actual patients. An occasional cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause problems. Still, since HIV therapy is so important to keep steady, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated chamomile supplements.

What Is Fosamprenavir Used For?

Brand names: Lexiva, Telzir

Fosamprenavir tablets (sold as Fosamprenavir Calcium and Lexiva) are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children as young as 4 weeks old. It is not used alone — it is always part of a combination regimen.

For adults who have already taken protease inhibitor medicines before, fosamprenavir is used alongside a low dose of ritonavir. Once-daily dosing with ritonavir is not recommended for adults who have previously used protease inhibitors, or for any pediatric patients.
