Metoprolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP2D6 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP2D6. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the gist for metoprolol and chamomile. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down metoprolol. Lab studies hint that German chamomile might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, metoprolol could build up slightly, and you might notice more of its usual effects, like a slower heart rate, more tiredness, lightheadedness, or lower blood pressure.

The important part: this is only test-tube evidence, and it has never actually been reported in people. An occasional cup of chamomile tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you plan to use concentrated chamomile supplements regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on how you feel and your pulse.

About Metoprolol

What Is Metoprolol Used For?

Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL

Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.

Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
