Why this applies to Ertapenem

Ertapenem falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's a quick but important point about ertapenem (Invanz): it's actually given as an injection, not a pill you swallow. The interaction we have on file is about glucomannan's thick fiber gel slowing or reducing the absorption of oral medicines in your gut. Since ertapenem goes into a vein or muscle and skips the stomach entirely, that gut-absorption concern really doesn't apply here.

So in practical terms, glucomannan shouldn't lower how well your ertapenem fights the infection. Still, if you're taking other medicines by mouth alongside this fiber, it's smart to separate them by taking glucomannan 30 to 60 minutes after your oral doses. When in doubt, run your full medication list by your pharmacist or doctor.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
