Glyconutrients and Risankizumab-Rzaa

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Risankizumab-Rzaa

Risankizumab-Rzaa falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Glyconutrients interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that glyconutrients stimulate certain immune responses. Theoretically, glyconutrients might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking behind this one. Skyrizi works by quieting down part of your immune system (it blocks a signal called IL-23) to calm the inflammation behind plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, or Crohn's disease. Some lab studies hint that glyconutrients may rev up certain immune responses. So in theory, taking them could push against what Skyrizi is trying to do, possibly making it work a little less well and letting symptoms like skin patches or joint pain creep back.

I want to be honest, though: this is purely theoretical and based on test-tube research, not real patients. It's not something I'd lose sleep over. Still, since Skyrizi is a serious medication, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding glyconutrients.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Risankizumab-Rzaa page

“Echinacea captures the concern on this page better than any other entry. Risankizumab-rzaa (Skyrizi) treats plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and Crohn's disease by quieting one arm of the immune system, and echinacea, like nearly all 53 ingredients listed here, is taken specifically to stir the immune system up.”

About Glyconutrients

What is Glyconutrients?

  • General immune support
  • Overall wellness and energy
  • Cognitive or memory support
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive health

Glyconutrients are supplements containing certain sugar molecules (monosaccharides) that marketers claim are essential for cell communication and health. The science behind most health claims is weak and largely promotional, and your body already makes these sugars from a normal diet. They are generally low-risk, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using them, and don't rely on them to treat any disease.
