Drug & supplement interaction

Gossypol + Docetaxel

Docetaxel brand name: Taxotere.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Gossypol and Docetaxel in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Gossypol and Docetaxel

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Docetaxel and Gossypol in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Docetaxel

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Docetaxel is filed under 2 classifications — including cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Gossypol has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being digoxin (lanoxin) (moderate), diuretic drugs (moderate) and stimulant laxatives (moderate) — and none of Docetaxel’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Gossypol and Docetaxel May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

What Docetaxel Is Prescribed For, and What Gossypol Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Docetaxel is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Gossypol is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Docetaxel is prescribed for: Docetaxel Injection is used to treat a number of serious cancers. Beizray (docetaxel injection) is approved as a single agent for locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer after prior chemotherapy has stopped working, and in combination with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide as adjuvant (after-surgery) treatment for operable node-positive breast cancer. It is also used as a single agent for locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after platinum-based chemotherapy has failed, and with cisplatin for chemotherapy-naive advanced NSCLC. Beizray is used with prednisone for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Read the rest of what Docetaxel is prescribed for

It is also used with cisplatin and fluorouracil for advanced gastric adenocarcinoma (including gastroesophageal junction cancer) in patients who have not received prior chemotherapy for advanced disease, and for induction treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN).

Gossypol has been studied for:

  • Lung cancer studied, not established Gossypol has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Possibly Ineffective Read what the research shows

    Gossypol for lung cancer

Several clinical studies suggest that oral gossypol does not improve survival rates or reduce tumor progression in patients with advanced or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

  • Prostate cancer studied, not established Gossypol has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Possibly Ineffective Read what the research shows

    Gossypol for prostate cancer

Clinical research suggests that oral gossypol does not improve survival rates or prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels in patients with prostate cancer.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Docetaxel on your own; if you are taking Gossypol for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

Everything else you take

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Docetaxel

This page covers Gossypol only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Docetaxel page lists 121 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Grapefruit (major), St. John's Wort (major), Acacia Rigidula (moderate), Adrafinil (moderate) and African Wild Potato (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 87 moderate · 32 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Docetaxel page

“Grapefruit is the first thing I would take off the menu during docetaxel (Taxotere) chemotherapy. It blocks CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears docetaxel, and higher levels of a chemotherapy drug mean harsher side effects, not better results.”

About Gossypol

What is Gossypol?

Gossypol
  • Male contraception (research interest)
  • Reduction of sperm production
  • Endometriosis (historical/research)
  • Antiviral and antiparasitic research
  • Cancer cell research

Gossypol is a toxic yellow pigment from cotton plants that has been studied mainly as an experimental male contraceptive because it can lower sperm production. It is not an approved or safe over-the-counter supplement, and it carries serious risks including possibly permanent infertility, low potassium, and organ toxicity. It should not be used for self-treatment.

Gossypium hirsutum · Malvaceae · Seeds (cottonseed) and seed oil; the pigment gossypol is extracted from these · Purified compound used in research; not commonly sold as a standardized consumer supplement

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Gossypol is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Gossypol record says about it on its own.

Gossypol: dosing

There is no established safe or standardized dose of gossypol for supplement use. The doses studied in research were used under medical supervision and still carried serious risks.Because gossypol is toxic and not approved as a dietary supplement, we cannot recommend any specific amount. If you encounter a product that lists gossypol, do not use it without first speaking to a pharmacist or doctor, and follow any professional guidance rather than a product label alone.

Taking Gossypol and Docetaxel Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Gossypol with Docetaxel?
We do not list a known interaction between Gossypol and Docetaxel. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Gossypol and Docetaxel have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 9 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
Are Gossypol and Docetaxel used for the same thing?
They overlap in purpose, which usually means the real question is whether you need both rather than whether they are safe together. This page lists the shared uses and how strong the evidence is for Gossypol in each. That is a conversation for your prescriber, especially if Docetaxel is being adjusted to a target.
How was the Gossypol and Docetaxel combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Docetaxel is filed under 2 classifications, and Gossypol has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — none of Docetaxel's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Gossypol interact with any other medications?
Yes. Gossypol has 104 documented drug interactions in our database — Docetaxel is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Docetaxel interact with any supplements?
Yes. Docetaxel has documented interactions with 121 supplements in our database — Gossypol is not one of them. The Docetaxel interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
