Gotu Kola and Bromazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Bromazepam

Bromazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Gotu Kola interacts with.

Theoretically, taking gotu kola might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
In vitro research suggests that gotu kola may have sedative effects via binding of GABA receptors.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Bromazepam is a benzodiazepine that calms your nervous system, which is why it can make you feel drowsy, relaxed, or a little foggy. Gotu kola may have its own mild calming, sedative-like activity, possibly by acting on the same GABA pathways in the brain that bromazepam works on.

So if you take both together, the worry is simply more of the same. You could feel sleepier, more lightheaded, or less coordinated than usual. Keep in mind this caution is theoretical, based on lab studies rather than real patient reports, so it may not happen to you. Still, before pairing them, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and don't drive until you know how the combination affects you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bromazepam page

“Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety, and because it already slows the brain, anything else with a sedative pull can tip ordinary drowsiness into something dangerous. Eight of the 99 supplement and herbal ingredients here carry a major rating, and those eight are where I would start.”
