There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the concern with pairing gotu kola and carfilzomib (Kyprolis). Carfilzomib is a cancer medicine that can be hard on the liver, and gotu kola has been linked to liver irritation in a small number of reports. The worry is that using both together could add up and put extra stress on your liver. This isn't a case where one changes how the other is broken down, it's more about two things that can each bother the liver doing it at the same time.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical and based only on a handful of case reports, so we can't say for sure gotu kola was the cause. Still, since you're on a serious cancer treatment, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding gotu kola so they can keep an eye on your liver labs.

About Carfilzomib Injection

What Is Carfilzomib Injection Used For?

Brand name: Kyprolis

Kyprolis (carfilzomib) injection is used to treat adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow — whose disease has come back or stopped responding to earlier treatment. It is approved for patients who have received one or more prior lines of therapy.

Kyprolis may be given alone or in combination with other medications, including lenalidomide and dexamethasone, dexamethasone alone, daratumumab and dexamethasone, daratumumab and hyaluronidase-fihj and dexamethasone, or isatuximab and dexamethasone. The specific combination depends on how many prior treatments a patient has received and what their care team recommends.
