Emtricitabine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Gotu Kola interacts with.

There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Here's the simple version: this isn't about gotu kola changing how your HIV medicine works. Emtricitabine (Emtriva) is cleared mostly by your kidneys, so gotu kola won't speed it up or slow it down. The concern is a different one. Both can, in rare cases, be hard on the liver, so using them together might add a little extra strain.

I'll be honest about the evidence here. It's weak, just a handful of case reports where we can't even be sure gotu kola was the culprit. So I'm not raising any alarms. Still, if you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, call your doctor. Talk with your pharmacist before adding gotu kola, since you're on long-term HIV therapy.

What Is Emtricitabine Used For?

Brand name: Emtriva

Emtricitabine — sold as Emtriva (capsule and oral solution) and as generic emtricitabine capsules — is used to treat HIV-1 infection. It is always taken together with other antiretroviral (HIV-fighting) medicines, never alone.

Emtriva oral solution is an option for younger children and patients who cannot swallow capsules. Both forms are FDA-approved for this single purpose: treating HIV-1 infection as part of a combination regimen.
