Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your gut it can grab onto a pill and slow or reduce how much of it your body soaks up. With your captopril and hydrochlorothiazide combo, that means you might absorb a little less of each medicine, which could blunt how well your blood pressure is controlled.

This isn't a dangerous reaction, just a timing one. The easy fix is to space them out: take your blood pressure pill first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food amounts of fiber usually aren't a concern, but concentrated supplements are. If you notice your blood pressure creeping up, let your pharmacist or doctor know before changing anything.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
