Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUININE
The flowering above ground parts of hedge mustard contain cardioactive glycosides. Quinine may reduce the clearance of oral digoxin. Theoretically, concomitant use of quinine with hedge mustard might reduce the clearance of cardiac glycosides found in hedge mustard.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for this pairing. Hedge mustard's above-ground parts naturally contain small amounts of cardioactive glycosides, which are heart-affecting plant compounds. Quinine can slow how the body clears these kinds of glycosides, so in theory the two together could let those heart compounds build up a bit. If that happened, the worry would be heart-related effects like an irregular or pounding heartbeat, nausea, or feeling faint.
I want to be honest about how soft this is: it's purely theoretical, based on how these substances work, not on real cases. A throat tea or syrup likely contains very little of the active compound. Still, quinine itself can affect heart rhythm, so don't combine them on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hedge Mustard
What is Hedge Mustard?
- Hoarseness and voice loss
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild laryngitis
- Throat irritation
Hedge mustard is a traditional European herb long nicknamed the 'singer's plant' because it was used to soothe hoarseness and sore throats. Solid scientific evidence for these uses is very limited, so it is best seen as a folk remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Quinine
What Is Quinine Used For?
Brand name: Qualaquin
Quinine sulfate capsules (brands Qualaquin and Quinine Sulfate) are approved to treat uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in adults. This includes strains of malaria that have become resistant to chloroquine.
Quinine sulfate capsules are not approved for severe or complicated malaria, for preventing malaria, or for treating or preventing nocturnal leg cramps. Using them for leg cramps carries serious risks that outweigh any potential benefit.
