Theoretically, taking hedge mustard with macrolide antibiotics might increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity.

The flowering above ground parts of hedge mustard contain cardioactive glycosides. Macrolide antibiotics appear to increase the gastrointestinal absorption of oral digoxin. Theoretically, concomitant use of macrolide antibiotics might increase the absorption of the cardiac glycosides found in hedge mustard.

Here's the thing to know about this one: the concern isn't really about the antibiotic itself. Hedge mustard contains small amounts of natural heart-active compounds called cardiac glycosides. The interaction on file suggests that certain antibiotics might increase how much of those glycosides your gut absorbs, which could nudge them toward toxic levels (think nausea, irregular heartbeat, or feeling dizzy and weak).

But I want to be honest with you. This warning was built around macrolide antibiotics like azithromycin. Doripenem (Doribax) is a carbapenem, a different class entirely, and it's given by IV in the hospital. The gut-absorption effect linked to macrolides may not apply to it at all. The whole concern is also theoretical, based on pharmacology rather than real cases. Still, mention any supplements to your care team while you're being treated.

Here's the thing to understand about this one: the worry isn't really about your antibiotic itself. Hedge mustard naturally contains small amounts of cardioactive glycosides, which are heart-affecting compounds similar to digoxin. Certain antibiotics may boost how much of these compounds your gut absorbs. The concern is that more of the herb's heart-active chemicals could get into your system, which in theory might lead to symptoms like nausea, a slow or irregular heartbeat, or dizziness.

That said, this is purely theoretical. It's based on how the antibiotic group behaves with digoxin, and it was flagged for tetracyclines rather than carbapenems like doripenem (Doribax). Real-world evidence is essentially absent. Doripenem is also given as an IV in the hospital, not by mouth, which makes a gut-absorption interaction even less likely. Still, mention any supplements to your care team so nothing gets overlooked.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
