The flowering above ground parts of hedge mustard contain cardioactive glycosides. Theoretically, overuse or misuse of stimulant laxatives may increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion.

I want to be straight with you here: the interaction in our database is really about stimulant laxatives, not about armodafinil (Nuvigil). Armodafinil is a wakefulness-promoting medicine for sleepiness, and it does not deplete potassium or work like a laxative the way this warning describes. So the specific concern on file, that hedge mustard's natural heart-active compounds could become a problem when potassium drops, really doesn't apply to armodafinil.

That said, this whole interaction is only theoretical, based on the plant's chemistry rather than real cases. Since hedge mustard is more of a folk remedy than a proven one, it's still worth running it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with any medication you take.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
