The flowering above ground parts of hedge mustard contain cardioactive glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and hedge mustard can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion.

Here's the thing to know if you take torsemide (a 'water pill') and you're curious about hedge mustard. Torsemide isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about it being activated or broken down differently. The concern is potassium. Torsemide pushes your kidneys to flush out extra fluid and salt, and along the way it can lower your potassium. Hedge mustard's flowering parts contain small amounts of heart-active (cardiac glycoside) compounds, and low potassium can make those compounds harder on the heart.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on plant chemistry, not real-world reports, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, if you ever feel an irregular or pounding heartbeat, dizziness, muscle cramps, or unusual weakness, take it seriously. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, especially since your potassium may already be monitored.

What Is Torsemide Used For?

Brand names: Demadex, Soaanz

Torsemide tablets are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup causing swelling — associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease. Removing that extra fluid can relieve swelling and make breathing easier.

Torsemide tablets are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.
