Fruquintinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the quick version for anyone taking Fruquintinib (Fruzaqla) for colorectal cancer. Your body clears this medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, higenamine slowed that enzyme down a little (about 21%). If that were to happen in a real person, fruquintinib could build up a bit higher than expected, which in theory could mean more of its usual side effects, things like high blood pressure, fatigue, mouth sores, hand-foot skin reactions, or bleeding.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is: it's only test-tube data and has never been shown in people. Still, fruquintinib is a serious cancer drug, and higenamine itself can raise heart rate and blood pressure. I'd play it safe and run this by your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Fruquintinib Used For?

Brand name: Fruzaqla

Fruzaqla (fruquintinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) — colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is specifically for patients who have already been treated with several standard chemotherapy regimens and other targeted therapies.

Fruzaqla is intended for patients who have previously received fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin-, and irinotecan-based chemotherapy, an anti-VEGF therapy, and — if their tumor is RAS wild-type and it is medically appropriate — an anti-EGFR therapy.
