Verapamil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with these two together. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear verapamil out of your system. In lab dish studies, higenamine slowed that enzyme down a little (about 21 percent). If that happened in real life, verapamil could build up and hit you harder than usual. With a heart drug like verapamil, that might mean your heart rate dropping too low, dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling in your ankles, or constipation.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this was only seen in a test tube, not in people, so it's more of a theory than a proven problem. The bigger concern to me is that higenamine itself is a heart stimulant that can raise heart rate and blood pressure, which pulls against what verapamil is doing. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
