Here's the simple version: verapamil already relaxes your blood vessels and slows your heart rate to bring blood pressure down. The beetroot nitrates in these SuperBeets chews work in a similar direction by gently widening blood vessels. So you're essentially nudging blood pressure down from two angles at once. This isn't a chemical clash, and verapamil isn't a prodrug that gets flipped here. It's just two blood-pressure-lowering effects adding up.

The practical concern is feeling a bit dizzy, lightheaded, or washed out, especially when you stand up quickly. The research suggests this added effect is usually minor and short-lived, but it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, particularly if your pressure already runs low or you've felt faint on verapamil.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist for these chews and your verapamil. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break verapamil down. The grape seed extract in SuperBeets has shown, in test-tube studies only, a mild ability to slow that enzyme. In theory, slowing it could let a little more verapamil hang around, which might bump up its usual effects like lower blood pressure, a slower heart rate, dizziness, fatigue, or constipation.

That said, this is a very weak, lab-based concern with no real reports of it happening in people. On top of that, beets can gently lower blood pressure on their own. So it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, but please don't change your verapamil on your own.

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
