Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. Here's the gist with these chews and erythromycin. Each two-chew serving has about 150mg of grape seed extract, and in lab dish studies that extract can mildly block CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps break down erythromycin. If that enzyme slows down, your body could clear the antibiotic a little less efficiently, which in theory nudges blood levels up. With erythromycin that might mean more of its usual side effects, like stomach upset, nausea, cramping, or diarrhea.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern from laboratory work only, and there are no real human reports of it happening. The effect, if any, is likely small. Still, it's always smart to mention any supplement to your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with a new antibiotic.

What Is Erythromycin Used For?

Brand names: Erythro S, PCE, E-Mycin, Erythro-ES, EryPed Chewable, Eryc, Ery-Tab, Rythro Enca, Erythro E-C, Erythro Base, Ilosone, Ilotycin

Erythromycin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Oral and intravenous forms are used for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, pertussis (whooping cough), Legionnaires' disease, sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia), listeriosis, and other conditions. Erythrocin Lactobionate IV and erythromycin lactobionate injection are specifically for patients who cannot take oral medication or who need rapid, high blood levels due to severe infection — IV therapy should be switched to oral as soon as appropriate.

Erythromycin topical solution 2% and Ery 2% Pads (swabs) are indicated only for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris (acne) and are applied directly to the skin — they are not used for internal infections.
