Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Dapsone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Why this applies to Dapsone

Dapsone falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with these beet chews and your dapsone. The grape seed extract in each serving (about 150mg) may slightly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear dapsone. In theory, if that enzyme works a little slower, dapsone levels could nudge upward, which might raise the odds of side effects like headache, nausea, or, less commonly, blood-related issues such as low red blood cell counts (hemolysis) or a condition called methemoglobinemia.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. This concern comes only from lab studies, and there are no real reports of it actually happening in people. The evidence is weak and the risk is low. Still, since dapsone needs careful handling, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding these chews.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dapsone page

“Dapsone treats serious conditions, from dermatitis herpetiformis to leprosy, and its supplement list is one I'd want a patient to read closely rather than skim. Most entries touch how the body handles dapsone through the CYP3A4 enzyme, so grapefruit can raise its blood level while St.”
