Nifedipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear nifedipine out of your system. In lab dishes, higenamine slowed that enzyme down a bit (about 21%). If that happened in real life, nifedipine could build up and its effects could get stronger than expected, possibly leading to dizziness, flushing, headache, a fast heartbeat, swollen ankles, or blood pressure dropping too low.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only been seen in test-tube studies, never confirmed in people, so it's mostly theoretical. The bigger concern is that higenamine itself acts like adrenaline and can raise heart rate and blood pressure, which works against what nifedipine is trying to do. I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
