Maraviroc falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version for Selzentry (maraviroc). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine out. In a lab dish, higenamine slowed that same enzyme down a little (about 21%). If that happened in real life, maraviroc could build up more than expected, which might mean more of its side effects like dizziness, headache, low blood pressure when you stand up, or stomach upset.

The important thing: this is only a test-tube finding and has never been shown in actual people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Still, higenamine itself raises heart rate and blood pressure and has real safety worries. Before mixing it with your HIV regimen, please run it by your pharmacist or HIV provider first.

Higenamine is a plant-based stimulant compound added to many weight-loss and pre-workout supplements, but there is very little human evidence that it works and real concerns about heart and blood pressure effects. It is banned in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and product labels often list inaccurate amounts, so most people should approach it with caution and talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Maraviroc

What Is Maraviroc Used For?

Brand names: Celsentri, Selzentry

Maraviroc treats a specific type of HIV-1 infection called CCR5-tropic HIV-1. It is always used alongside other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. A special test called a tropism assay must be done before starting treatment to confirm you have the right type of HIV.

Selzentry (the brand-name oral solution and tablet) is approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 2 kg. Generic maraviroc tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older weighing at least 10 kg. Neither form is recommended for patients whose HIV is classified as dual/mixed-tropic or CXCR4-tropic.
