Here's the gist for Anafranil (clomipramine): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear this medication out of your system. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab studies appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in your body, clomipramine could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects, things like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, or a faster heartbeat.

The honest caveat: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since clomipramine affects the heart and mood, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated Hu Zhang supplement.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help break down clomipramine. The resveratrol in Hu Zhang may block that enzyme, at least in lab studies. If it slows that breakdown, more clomipramine could linger in your system, which can mean stronger effects and more of its usual side effects, things like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's theoretical, based on test-tube data, and hasn't actually been reported in people. So don't panic. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding Hu Zhang, since clomipramine is one of those medicines where the dose is finely tuned.

Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down clomipramine. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab dishes can slow that enzyme down a bit. If that slowdown happened in real life, clomipramine could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean more of its usual side effects, things like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on test-tube data. One human study using a large resveratrol dose didn't require any medication changes. Still, since clomipramine can affect heart rhythm and mood, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Clomipramine — sold as Anafranil and under the generic name Clomipramine Hydrochloride — is approved to treat obsessions and compulsions in people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This includes adults and children/adolescents ages 10 to 17.

To qualify for treatment, the obsessions or compulsions must cause significant distress, take up a lot of time, or noticeably interfere with work, school, or social life.
