Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Zyflo (zileuton) and Hu Zhang. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear zileuton out of your body. The resveratrol in Hu Zhang may slow that enzyme down, at least in lab dishes. If that happened in a person, zileuton could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its known side effects, things like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver enzymes.

I want to be honest though: this is purely theoretical. It has not actually been reported in people, and food amounts of resveratrol are unlikely to matter much. Since zileuton already needs liver monitoring, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement so they can keep an eye on things.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for your asthma medicine. Your body clears Zileuton (Zyflo) partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in test-tube studies may slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, Zileuton could build up slightly and you might notice more of its usual side effects, like stomach upset, headache, or nausea. Zileuton can also stress the liver, so anything affecting liver processing is worth a second look.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on lab data, and one human study with high-dose resveratrol didn't require any medication changes. Real worry is low, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially since Zileuton already needs liver monitoring.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
