Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with whole categories of medication. Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Humann Superbeets Heart Chews in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

1 of 2

Why this applies to Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl

Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP2D6 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's crucial to highlight that, as of now, there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist for your Vicks Formula 44D. The dextromethorphan piece (the cough suppressant) is cleared mostly by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. The grape seed extract in these SuperBeets chews has shown, in lab dish studies only, a mild ability to slow that enzyme down. In theory, slower clearance could let dextromethorphan build up a little, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or stomach upset than usual.

That said, this has never actually been reported in real people, and the effect is rated minor and unlikely. The phenylephrine part isn't really involved here. For most folks taking these together short-term, it's not a big worry. If you have high blood pressure or heart concerns, though, run it past your pharmacist first.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

2 of 2

Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl also falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your Vicks Formula 44D and the SuperBeets chews. The grape seed extract in each serving has shown, mostly in lab dish studies, that it might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant) leans partly on that pathway. In theory, slowing it could let a bit more linger in your system, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy feeling than usual.

That said, this is a very weak, unproven connection. It has never actually been reported in real people, only suggested in a test tube, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The phenylephrine (decongestant) isn't really cleared this way. Just take both as directed, and if you ever feel unusually woozy or your heart races, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.
