Ethosuximide falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist for your seizure medicine. The grape seed extract in these chews (about 150mg per serving) has shown, in lab dishes only, that it might gently slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4. Since your body uses that enzyme to help break down ethosuximide, the theory is that the drug could clear a little slower and creep up in your blood. If that happened, you might notice more of the usual ethosuximide side effects, like nausea, stomach upset, drowsiness, hiccups, or feeling dizzy.

That said, this is very much a maybe. There are no real human reports of it actually happening, so I'd file it as low concern rather than something to lose sleep over. Still, since this medicine keeps your absence seizures in check, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding the chews.

What Is Ethosuximide Used For?

Brand name: Zarontin

Ethosuximide — sold as Zarontin and also available as generic Ethosuximide — is used to control absence (petit mal) epilepsy. Absence seizures are brief episodes where a person loses awareness for a few seconds, often mistaken for daydreaming.

Both Zarontin and Ethosuximide products (capsule and oral solution forms) are approved for this use. Either may also be used alongside other seizure medicines when a patient has absence seizures together with other types of epilepsy.
