Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Remdesivir

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Why this applies to Remdesivir

Remdesivir falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Remdesivir (Veklury): this antiviral is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The grape seed extract in SuperBeets Heart Chews (about 150mg per serving) has shown in lab dishes that it might slow down this enzyme a little. In theory, that could let remdesivir clear a bit slower and build up slightly, which might raise the odds of side effects like nausea or changes in liver enzyme readings.

That said, this is very much a theoretical, weak-evidence concern. There are no real human reports of it actually happening, and remdesivir is given in a hospital or clinic setting where you're monitored. It's worth mentioning to your care team, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Remdesivir page

“Remdesivir (Veklury) is an IV antiviral for serious COVID-19, and people receiving it have often spent the prior week loading up on elderberry and other immune boosters, a habit that deserves a hard look here. Seven of the 140 supplement ingredients on file are rated major, and those seven are the ones to understand first.”
