Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Trazodone HCl

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with whole categories of medication. Trazodone HCl falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Humann Superbeets Heart Chews in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

1 of 2

Why this applies to Trazodone HCl

Trazodone HCl falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP2D6 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's crucial to highlight that, as of now, there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist for your trazodone. The grape seed extract in these chews has shown, in lab tests only, a possible ability to slow down an enzyme called CYP2D6, which plays a minor role in clearing trazodone from your body. In theory, if that enzyme worked a little slower, trazodone levels could nudge up, which might mean a bit more drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or lightheadedness when standing.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. There are no real-world reports of this actually happening in people, and trazodone leans on several pathways to break down, not just this one. The chances of a meaningful problem are low. Still, since trazodone already lowers blood pressure and beet chews can too, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

2 of 2

Trazodone HCl also falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for trazodone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down and clear it out. The grape seed extract in these chews has shown some ability to slow that same enzyme, but only in lab dish studies, not in real people. In theory, if that enzyme runs slower, trazodone could hang around a bit longer and build up.

If that did happen, you might notice more of trazodone's usual effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up. That said, this is a minor and unlikely concern with no reported human cases. Trazodone is not a prodrug, so it would be stronger effects, not weaker ones. If you take both and feel unusually groggy, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
