Isopropylnorsynephrine and Dexbrompheniramine, Pseudoephedrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Dexbrompheniramine, Pseudoephedrine

Dexbrompheniramine, Pseudoephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Isopropylnorsynephrine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking isopropylnorsynephrine with stimulant drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects.
Isopropylnorsynephrine is an investigational beta-agonist and a derivative of synephrine and octopamine, which are stimulant constituents of bitter orange. In vitro research shows that isopropylnorsynephrine is a highly selective, direct-acting beta-adrenergic receptor agonist with positive chronotropic effects. Theoretically, isopropylnorsynephrine may also have stimulant effects.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about this combo: the pseudoephedrine half of your product (the decongestant in Drixoral) is itself a stimulant. It already nudges up your heart rate and blood pressure. Isopropylnorsynephrine is another stimulant-type compound, so stacking the two could pile on those effects rather than cancel them out.

In real life that might show up as a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, higher blood pressure, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical and based mostly on how these ingredients behave in the lab, not on solid human studies. Still, since both are stimulants, it's worth running past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you have any heart or blood pressure concerns.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dexbrompheniramine, Pseudoephedrine page

“Ephedra is the supplement I would rule out first for anyone taking dexbrompheniramine and pseudoephedrine (Drixoral, Disophrol), an antihistamine and decongestant combination for colds and allergies. Pseudoephedrine already stimulates the heart and raises blood pressure, and stacking a stimulant herb on top accounts for four of the fiv…”

  • Appetite suppression
  • Athletic performance

Isopropylnorsynephrine is a synthetic stimulant chemically related to synephrine, marketed mainly in weight-loss and pre-workout supplements. It has very little human safety or effectiveness research, and as a stimulant it may raise heart rate and blood pressure, so caution is strongly advised. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using any product that contains it.
