Modafinil falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Isopropylnorsynephrine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking isopropylnorsynephrine with stimulant drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects.
Isopropylnorsynephrine is an investigational beta-agonist and a derivative of synephrine and octopamine, which are stimulant constituents of bitter orange. In vitro research shows that isopropylnorsynephrine is a highly selective, direct-acting beta-adrenergic receptor agonist with positive chronotropic effects. Theoretically, isopropylnorsynephrine may also have stimulant effects.

Here's the simple version: modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting medication, and on its own it can already nudge up your heart rate and blood pressure. Isopropylnorsynephrine is a stimulant too. So when you stack the two, the worry is that their effects pile on top of each other. We call that an additive effect, and with two stimulants it could mean a faster heartbeat, palpitations, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, headache, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. This concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave in the lab rather than proven cases in people. Isopropylnorsynephrine also has very little human safety research behind it. That doesn't mean ignore it, just don't panic. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you have any heart or blood pressure history.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
