Isopropylnorsynephrine and Amphetamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Isopropylnorsynephrine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking isopropylnorsynephrine with stimulant drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects.
Isopropylnorsynephrine is an investigational beta-agonist and a derivative of synephrine and octopamine, which are stimulant constituents of bitter orange. In vitro research shows that isopropylnorsynephrine is a highly selective, direct-acting beta-adrenergic receptor agonist with positive chronotropic effects. Theoretically, isopropylnorsynephrine may also have stimulant effects.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: amphetamine is already a powerful stimulant. It speeds up your heart rate, can bump up your blood pressure, and may leave you feeling jittery, anxious, or unable to sleep. Isopropylnorsynephrine is also a stimulant that acts on the same kind of receptors that drive heart rate and energy. So when you stack the two together, the worry is that their effects pile on top of each other.

In plain terms, combining them could push your heart and blood pressure higher than amphetamine alone, raising the odds of a racing heartbeat, palpitations, or feeling wound up. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not from solid human studies. Still, since this supplement has little safety research, I'd run it past your doctor or pharmacist before mixing them.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

  • Athletic performance

Isopropylnorsynephrine is a synthetic stimulant chemically related to synephrine, marketed mainly in weight-loss and pre-workout supplements. It has very little human safety or effectiveness research, and as a stimulant it may raise heart rate and blood pressure, so caution is strongly advised.
