Kratom and Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate

Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kratom interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk for adverse CNS depressant effects.
Kratom contains mitragynine, a mu-receptor agonist that may cause respiratory depression. Although results from animal research suggest that mitragynine causes less respiratory depression than the CNS depressant codeine, fatalities have been reported for patients who ingested a combination of kratom and O-desmethyltramadol, another mu-receptor agonist. Additionally, observational research suggests that adverse effects such as drowsiness and coma are more likely to occur in individuals taking kratom in combination with agents such as opioids and sedatives. Theoretically, ingesting kratom along with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of adverse effects, including drowsiness, coma, and/or severe or fatal respiratory depression.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combination I worry about most is the amobarbital, which is a barbiturate sedative. Barbiturates already slow down your brain and breathing, and they're known for being dangerous when stacked with anything else that calms the body. Kratom's main compound, mitragynine, acts a bit like an opioid on those same brain receptors. Put them together and you can pile up sedation: think heavy drowsiness, confusion, very slow or shallow breathing, and in a worst case, losing consciousness.

This concern is based mostly on how these drugs work and on reports of harm with kratom plus sedatives, not on a formal study, so it's theoretical. Even so, the stakes are too high to guess. Please don't add kratom to amobarbital without first talking it through with your doctor or pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate page

“Ephedrine & Amytal pairs a barbiturate sedative, amobarbital, with the stimulant ephedrine, so the supplements that interact with it pull in two directions at once, and I would treat this list with genuine care. Ten of the 132 ingredients on file are rated major: alcohol and kava can deepen the sedation toward dangerously slowed breath…”
