L-cysteine and Chloramphenicol

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Chloramphenicol and L-cysteine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Chloramphenicol

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Chloramphenicol is filed under 3 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) inhibitors, antibiotic drugs. L-cysteine has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Chloramphenicol’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Chloramphenicol’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves L-cysteine. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Chloramphenicol’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 8 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • A low platelet count Worth acting on
  • Anemia Worth acting on

Read the label on DailyMed › L-cysteine’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no L-cysteine side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that L-cysteine has no side effects.

L-cysteine in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally in amounts found in foods. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of amounts greater than those found in foods; avoid use. Some research suggests that taking L-cysteine during lactation increases levels of free L-cysteine in breastmilk. However, these levels are lower than those found in some commercial hydrolyzed protein infant formulas.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chloramphenicol page

“Almost everything on this chloramphenicol list points at the supplement rather than the drug. Chloramphenicol is a powerful antibiotic, usually reserved for serious infections or used as eye drops, and the great majority of entries are probiotics and fermented products such as acidophilus and Bifidobacterium strains.”

About L-cysteine

What is L-cysteine?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Skin and hair health
  • Liver support
  • Respiratory and mucus thinning
  • General protein/amino acid supplementation

L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body uses to make proteins and the antioxidant glutathione. Most people get enough from food, and supplements are usually well tolerated, but strong evidence supporting specific health benefits from extra L-cysteine is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.

Amino acid (not a plant part) · Capsules, tablets, powder; also available as N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether L-cysteine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our L-cysteine record says about it on its own.

L-cysteine: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of L-cysteine established for general supplement use. Products vary widely in strength, and much of the dosing research actually involves NAC rather than plain L-cysteine.The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. Higher doses have not been well studied and may increase the risk of side effects.
