ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ceftolozane Sulfate, Tazobactam Sodium
Ceftolozane Sulfate, Tazobactam Sodium falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Johnsonii interacts with.
Lactobacillus johnsonii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. johnsonii preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know about pairing a probiotic like Lactobacillus johnsonii with Zerbaxa (ceftolozane and tazobactam): this antibiotic is designed to kill bacteria, and it can't tell the difference between the bad bugs causing your infection and the friendly live bacteria in your probiotic. So taking them at the same time may simply wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic, leaving you with less benefit from it.
The good news is the interaction goes one direction only. Your probiotic won't make Zerbaxa weaker or cause side effects, it just makes the probiotic less useful. A simple fix is spacing them apart by at least two hours. Since Zerbaxa is usually given in a hospital by IV, check with your pharmacist or nurse on the best timing.
