ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Phenazopyridine, Sulfamethizole
Phenazopyridine, Sulfamethizole falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Latilactobacillus Sakei interacts with.
Latilactobacillus sakei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. sakei preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: this combo product pairs sulfamethizole, an antibiotic, with phenazopyridine, a bladder pain reliever that turns your urine orange. The concern isn't that the medicine harms you. It's the other way around. Latilactobacillus sakei is a live probiotic, and the sulfamethizole portion is designed to kill bacteria. Taken at the same time, the antibiotic may simply wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms, so you get less benefit from the supplement.
This is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not a dangerous reaction. Your antibiotic still treats your infection normally. A practical fix is to space them out by at least two hours. As always, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.
