Why this applies to Bellafoline, Phenobarbital

Bellafoline, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

The product you're asking about contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the brain and nervous system, along with belladonna alkaloids. Mace, the spice, contains aromatic oils that may have their own mild sedative-like effects in the body. When you stack two things that both slow down the brain, the worry is that the effects could add up. With phenobarbital that might mean extra drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, or feeling very groggy.

Here's the honest part: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on animal studies, and the research is even a little mixed. The amount of mace you'd use in cooking is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated mace supplements are the real question mark. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Evidence from animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of mace, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Theoretically, concomitant use may decrease the therapeutic effects of phenobarbital.

Your Belladenal product contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system and is used for sedation and seizures. The concern here is theoretical and comes only from animal studies. In rats, myristicin (a compound in mace) appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept them asleep, which hints that mace might speed up how the body handles phenobarbital and make it a little less effective.

In real terms, that could mean weaker calming effects or, if you take this for seizures, less reliable control. But this is lab-level evidence only, and normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using them.

What is Mace?

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
