Magnolia and Hyoscyamine, Phenobarbital

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Hyoscyamine, Phenobarbital

Hyoscyamine, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination pill contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the brain and central nervous system. Magnolia bark, through its compounds honokiol and magnolol, appears to have its own mild calming effect, likely by nudging the same GABA pathways. So the worry here is that the two could pile on top of each other and leave you more sedated than expected, with possible drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, or trouble staying alert.

I'll be honest about the evidence though: this is only based on lab and animal studies, so it's theoretical and most likely to matter with concentrated magnolia supplement doses, not a sip of tea. Still, since phenobarbital is already strongly sedating, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding magnolia.
