Phenobarbital, Phenytoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Here's the simple version. This combination on file pairs magnolia with this medicine because of overlapping calming effects, not because of how the drug is broken down. Phenobarbital is itself a sedative, and magnolia's compounds (honokiol and magnolol) appear to nudge the same GABA brain pathways that make you feel relaxed or drowsy. Stack them and you may feel extra sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes from lab and animal studies only, so it's more of a theoretical caution, and mostly with large, concentrated magnolia doses. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding magnolia, and never change your seizure medicine on your own.
