ASPIRIN

Theoretically, meadowsweet might have an additive effect with other salicylate-containing drugs, such as aspirin.
Meadowsweet contains salicin, a plant salicylate; however, salicin doesn't seem to have the antiplatelet effects of aspirin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your medicine Synalgos DC already contains aspirin, which is a salicylate. Meadowsweet naturally carries its own aspirin-like compounds (salicylates), so taking both means you could be stacking similar chemicals on top of each other. In theory, that extra salicylate load could nudge up the chance of typical aspirin-type side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, or stomach irritation.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not on solid human studies, and the salicylate in meadowsweet doesn't appear to thin the blood the way aspirin does. Still, since you're already getting a real aspirin dose, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding meadowsweet.

About Meadowsweet

What is Meadowsweet?

Meadowsweet
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Mild aches and pains
  • Fever
  • Joint discomfort

Meadowsweet is a traditional European herb that contains natural salicylates (aspirin-like compounds) and is used mainly for digestive upset, colds, and minor aches. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are not well proven, and people sensitive to aspirin should be cautious. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
