Meadowsweet and Aspirin, Pentazocine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ASPIRIN

Theoretically, meadowsweet might have an additive effect with other salicylate-containing drugs, such as aspirin.
Meadowsweet contains salicin, a plant salicylate; however, salicin doesn't seem to have the antiplatelet effects of aspirin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talwin Compound combines pentazocine (a pain reliever) with aspirin. Here's the thing about meadowsweet: it carries its own natural aspirin-like compounds called salicylates. So when you pair it with a product that already contains aspirin, you're essentially stacking similar ingredients on top of each other. In theory, that could nudge your total salicylate load a little higher.

What might that look like? Mostly the familiar aspirin-type stuff: stomach upset, heartburn, ringing in the ears, or a bit more risk of stomach irritation. I want to be honest though, this concern is theoretical and based on pharmacology, not strong studies, and the salicin in meadowsweet doesn't seem to thin the blood the way aspirin does. Still, if you're sensitive to aspirin, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Meadowsweet

What is Meadowsweet?

Meadowsweet
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Mild aches and pains
  • Fever
  • Joint discomfort

Meadowsweet is a traditional European herb that contains natural salicylates (aspirin-like compounds) and is used mainly for digestive upset, colds, and minor aches. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are not well proven, and people sensitive to aspirin should be cautious. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
