Oregano and Semaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Semaglutide

Semaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Oregano interacts with.

Theoretically, oregano might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that oregano extracts might lower blood glucose levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with oregano and your semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, or Wegovy). Semaglutide already works to lower your blood sugar, and some lab and animal studies hint that concentrated oregano extracts may nudge blood sugar down too. Put together, the theory is that oregano could add a little extra blood-sugar-lowering on top, which means a slightly higher chance of going too low (hypoglycemia). Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling suddenly hungry or confused.

I want to be honest, though: this is based on test-tube and animal work, not solid human studies, so the real-world risk is likely small. Oregano as a kitchen seasoning is no concern at all. If you're thinking about concentrated oregano oil capsules, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Semaglutide page

“Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) lowers blood sugar, and so do most of the 256 supplements on this page, which is why I read this list with real vigilance rather than a shrug. Nearly all of the entries either add to its glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, or push sugar the other way and blunt it, as niaci…”

About Oregano

What is Oregano?

Oregano
  • Digestive upset
  • Respiratory and cold symptoms
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Skin and fungal concerns

Oregano is a common Mediterranean cooking herb that is also sold as a concentrated oil or supplement, often standardized for a compound called carvacrol. While lab studies suggest it may have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, strong human evidence for treating any specific health condition is limited. Used as a food, oregano is very safe; concentrated oregano oil supplements should be used cautiously and discussed with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Semaglutide

What Is Semaglutide Used For?

Brand names: Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy

Semaglutide is available as Wegovy (injection and tablet) and Ozempic (injection), and each product has its own approved uses. Wegovy injection is approved — alongside diet and exercise — to reduce excess body weight in adults and in children aged 12 and older with obesity, to lower the risk of serious heart events (heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death) in adults with obesity or overweight who also have established heart disease, and for treatment of a liver condition called MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, formerly called NASH) with moderate-to-advanced scarring in adults. Wegovy tablets share the cardiovascular risk reduction and weight management uses in adults, but are not approved for MASH or for use in children. Ozempic injection is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise) and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have established heart disease.

All forms are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Ozempic is not approved for type 1 diabetes. The MASH approval for Wegovy injection is an accelerated approval, meaning continued approval may depend on results from a confirmatory study.
